Summer Milky Way

Click for wallpaper download

A close up just north of the Sagittarius region of the Milky Way. The predominate reddish nebula seen in the photograph are the Eagle nebula and Omega nebula. The pair reside 5000 – 7000 light years away. The dark regions are areas where stellar dust and gas are blocking out star light behind them. The stars are so dense because we’re looking directly into the center of the galaxy. To the naked eye the Milky Way appears as a wispy cloud because our eyes cannot resolve the individual stars.

Polaris

Due to the Earth’s roation, stars rotate around Polaris (a.k.a. the North Star). Because Polaris is right near our celestial pole, it always stays at the same spot in the sky. Other streaks in the sky are meteors.
